Roman Theatre of Montaudou

Excavated Roman theatre on the hill south of the city centre

The Roman theatre of Montaudou is an excavated site on the hillside south of the Clermont city centre, revealing the remains of a significant Gallo-Roman theatre that was part of the ancient city of Augustonemetum — the predecessor of modern Clermont. The site dates to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and would have held several thousand spectators during its active period.

The excavations are partially consolidated and open to visitors. The hillside location means the theatre preserves something of its original relationship to the city it served — looking up the slope toward the plateau, you can understand the urban geography of the Roman settlement. The site is free to visit and less promoted than the medieval monuments, which means you are often alone there. Good walking shoes are needed; the slope is uneven.
