Vulcania

Volcanic science theme park at the base of the Chaîne des Puys

Vulcania is a science and adventure park dedicated to volcanoes and earth sciences, located on the volcanic plateau west of Clermont-Ferrand, at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys. It was designed by architect Hans Hollein with the main structure largely below ground, and focuses on making volcanology accessible and exciting for families. The exhibits combine scientific content with simulations and rides — a volcanic eruption simulator, a 4D cinema, and demonstrations of geological processes.

The park is primarily oriented toward families with children and school groups, but the underlying science is solid. For visitors who want to understand the volcanic landscape they are standing in before heading up the Puy de Dôme, Vulcania provides useful context. The setting on the plateau is itself impressive — the volcanic cones visible on the horizon give the science content a tangible reality. The park is open from April to November; check dates and opening times before visiting, as they vary significantly by season.

A story
Vulcania was designed by Hans Hollein, the Austrian architect who won the Pritzker Prize in 1985. The park is built largely underground, with only the cone-shaped entrance protruding above the plateau surface — a deliberate reference to the volcanic landscape. When it opened in 2002 it was a significant European science communication project, partly funded by the French state.
