The Gorges du Tarn cut through the limestone plateaus north of Millau for around fifty kilometres between Le Rozier and Ispagnac. Cliffs rise three hundred to five hundred metres above the river, and the road that follows the bank — the D907 — is one of the great drives in France, slow and twisting, with stop-offs at medieval villages like Sainte-Énimie and La Malène.
The Tarn itself is fine for canoeing in summer; rental shops in Le Rozier and La Malène kit you out for trips of a few hours to a couple of days. Hikers should head up onto the Causse Méjean, where the plateau opens out into empty grassland and old shepherd hamlets. Vultures, reintroduced in the 1980s, now nest on the cliffs and are often seen riding the thermals above the gorge.
