Opéra de Vichy

The Opéra de Vichy is a superb example of the municipal ambition that characterised France's leading spa resorts at the turn of the twentieth century. The building's ornate facade — all columns, pediments, and confident stonework — sits on the edge of the Parc des Sources and sets the tone for the whole thermal district. It was designed to impress, and it still does. The auditorium has been restored to its original gilded splendour, with excellent acoustics and a full view from almost every seat.

The opera runs a proper season from early summer through autumn, taking advantage of the influx of thermal visitors. It also hosts ballet, concerts, and occasional pop performances. Programming is serious — this is not a provincial theatre coasting on its architecture — and the combination of a great building, a lively program, and the thermal setting makes an evening here one of the best things to do in Vichy. A story
The Opéra de Vichy was completed in 1901, commissioned at a moment when the city's thermal reputation was drawing some of the wealthiest visitors in Europe. Its interior has an unusually wide stage relative to its auditorium, designed so that the elaborate sets fashionable at the turn of the century could be properly deployed. During the Vichy regime years of 1940–44, performances continued here as if nothing had changed outside — the opera, like the thermal baths, was part of the fiction that Vichy was simply a functioning, normal capital.
