Musee Zervos

Modern-art museum on Vezelay's medieval hill, built around Christian Zervos's collection.

Musee Zervos is the modern-art surprise on Vézelay's medieval hill. It occupies the former home of writer Romain Rolland and displays the collection of Christian Zervos, the critic, publisher, and Picasso scholar whose circle reached deep into 20th-century European art.

The rooms are small, but the names are not: works associated with Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky, Calder, Léger, and their contemporaries make a sharp contrast with the Romanesque stone outside. It is a good second stop after the basilica, especially if you want Vézelay to feel like more than a single-monument village.
