Sarthe and Huisne Rivers

The rivers Sarthe and Huisne meet at the southern edge of Le Mans, and the confluence and riverbanks provide the city's best green escape. The Sarthe towpath is walkable and cyclable for several kilometres in both directions, passing under the old bridges and through stretches of riverside park with views back up to the cathedral hill.

The area around the Île aux Planches — a small island in the Sarthe accessible by footbridge — is popular with local families in summer. Canoes and kayaks can be hired from operators near the city centre, and the river upstream offers pleasant paddling through countryside that feels remarkably rural for a city of 150,000. The confluence point itself, where the green Huisne meets the broader Sarthe, is worth finding.
