Market Square

The central square of Richelieu is flanked by two covered market halls facing each other — both original 17th-century structures, built as part of Cardinal Richelieu's initial plan for the town. They survive in good condition and still serve their original purpose: a Saturday market takes place here each week, in keeping with the commercial function the Cardinal intended when he laid out the town.

The square itself has the same quality as the rest of Richelieu — formally composed, symmetrical, slightly too perfect — but the Saturday market gives it life that the rest of the town doesn't always have. The combination of the original market halls, the uniform surrounding façades, and a functioning weekly market is as close as you can get to seeing the town as it was designed to be used.
