A bookshop set into a 13th-century vaulted stone basement just off the Place du Châtel. The space alone is worth the visit — heavy ribbed vaulting, exposed limestone walls, and a stone staircase that descends from the street into the cool interior. The owner has fitted the shelves into the alcoves and arches of the medieval room without disturbing the architecture.
The stock is a mix of medieval history (in French, with a small English-language shelf), regional travel, illustrated books on the trade fairs and the Champagne region, and the occasional secondhand find. There is also a small selection of pottery and crafts.
The shop keeps unpredictable hours; the door is locked when the owner is out. If you find it open, allow time both to browse and to look at the room itself. The name punning "Le Roi Lire" (King Lear) is intentional.
