Place du Châtel

Cobbled medieval square at the heart of the upper town

Address Place du Châtel, 77160 Provins
Admission Free

The central square of the upper town, a wide cobbled space ringed with stone houses dating mostly to the 13th to 16th centuries. The square was the main market area of the medieval town and is still the principal gathering point — outdoor restaurant terraces fill the perimeter in summer, and the square hosts the annual medieval festival (Les Médiévales) in early June.

At the centre stands the old market cross, a stone column on a stepped base. The houses on the east side include some of the best-preserved medieval merchants' houses in town — look up at the carved wooden window frames and the half-timbered upper storeys. The 17th-century well at the south end is still in working order.

The square is a few minutes' walk from the Tour César and a natural starting point for exploring the upper town. The tourist information office is on the south-eastern corner.
