G.H. Mumm Cellars

G.H. Mumm is the largest champagne producer in Reims and one of the most accessible for visitors. Its cellars on the Rue du Champ de Mars offer guided tours that are less formal than some of the grander houses and well-suited to those new to champagne. The 25 kilometres of cellars house around 25 million bottles at any one time.

The tasting room is comfortably designed for groups, and several tasting options are available, from a standard introduction to a longer flight of prestige cuvées. Mumm is also the official champagne of Formula 1, which gives the brand a globally recognizable profile. Book ahead, especially in summer, as tour slots fill up.

A story
Mumm's flagship Cordon Rouge — the label with the distinctive red sash — was originally designed to mimic the cordon of France's Légion d'honneur. The house was founded in 1827 by three Germans (the Mumm family from the Rhine), and was confiscated by France during World War I as enemy property, becoming the only major champagne house to have been nationalized and then returned to private ownership.
