Cité du Vitrail

The Cité du Vitrail opened in 2021 inside the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte, a former hospital that had been in continuous use from the 12th century until 2009. The museum focuses on stained glass as a craft and an art form: how it was made, how it has evolved across eight centuries, and why Troyes became one of its great centres.

The displays include both historic panels and contemporary commissions, and the building itself — with its original dispensary, chapel, and long wards — is worth visiting in its own right. If you are going to spend any time in the churches and cathedral, visiting here first gives you the vocabulary to appreciate what you are looking at. Allow 90 minutes.
