Vieux Port

The Vieux Port is the ancient heart of Bastia, a small harbour enclosed by tall buildings on three sides and open to the sea on the fourth. The quays are lined with fishing boats and small pleasure craft, with the cafes and restaurants behind them arranged so that almost every table has a view of the water and the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste rising above the roofline.

The harbour is at its best in the early morning, before the heat builds, when fishermen unload the night's catch and the first cafe tables fill up. In the evenings it fills again as locals stroll the quay and tourists discover that Bastia has more character than the cruise ship port suggested. The Vieux Port gives direct access to the Terra Vecchia quarter, Bastia's most atmospheric neighbourhood, whose lanes and stairways wind up behind the harbour toward the citadel.

A story
Bastia's old harbour was the commercial heart of Genoese Corsica — not a pleasure marina but a working port where grain, wine, and olive oil moved between the island and the Italian mainland for five centuries. The tall, narrow houses that flank it, some rising six storeys, were built by Genoese merchants who needed to store goods at street level and live above the warehouses. The pastel paint colours — ochre, terracotta, yellow — are not decoration but the mineral-based pigments that traditionally protected render in humid coastal climates.
