Plage de la Garoupe

Sheltered sandy cove on the eastern side of Cap d'Antibes

Plage de la Garoupe is a small, sandy beach tucked into a cove on the eastern flank of Cap d'Antibes. It faces east, so the morning sun is good and the afternoons are sheltered from the wind by the cap. The sand is fine and the water shelves gently, which makes it a popular family beach.

It was famously the beach where Gerald and Sara Murphy persuaded the Hôtel du Cap to stay open through the summer in the 1920s, kicking off the whole idea of a summer Riviera season. The eastern half is public; the western half is divided into private beach clubs with umbrellas and pricier lunch. The coastal path that runs around the cap passes right behind it.
