Versailles Chantiers Station Area

Versailles Chantiers is the town's main railway station — larger and more central than the Château Rive Gauche stop — and the neighbourhood around it is ordinary Versailles: boulangeries, supermarkets, a post office, the kind of unremarkable high street that tourists bypassing the town on their way to the palace never see.

The station sits at the junction of three rail lines: the Transilien N from Paris Montparnasse, the Transilien U from La Défense, and the Transilien C continuing to Rambouillet and Chartres. If you are visiting Versailles as part of a longer trip through the Île-de-France it is a useful hub. The town centre and the market are a 10-minute walk north from here.

The Chantiers area (the word means workyards or workshops) takes its name from the building yards where timber and stone were stored and processed during the construction of the palace. The neighbourhood grew up around these industrial functions in the 17th century and retains a slightly less polished character than the streets nearer the palace.
