Pont Vieux

The Pont Vieux is the fourteenth-century stone bridge that links the Bastide to the Cité across the Aude. Twelve arches, pedestrian-only since the nineteenth century, and the best place in the city for the classic photograph of the walls rising from the river.

A small octagonal stone shrine — the Croix de Mission — stands at the centre. The view changes completely with the light: cold and grey in winter morning, gold and theatrical at sunset.

A story
Until 1849 the Pont Vieux was the only crossing of the Aude at Carcassonne, carrying traffic between the Cité and the Bastide for the better part of six hundred years. The Pont Neuf upstream took the modern road traffic and left the Pont Vieux pedestrianised — much to the benefit of photographers.
