The Jardin Botanique Pierre Fabre, also called the Conservatoire Botanique du Bosc dal Mas, is a private botanical garden a couple of kilometres south of the centre, on the grounds of the Pierre Fabre pharmaceutical laboratories. The Fabre group's business is plant-based medicines and cosmetics, and the garden is a living catalogue of medicinal plants — 1,800 species arranged by geographic origin and therapeutic property.
It is more a working scientific garden than a pleasure ground, but it is open to the public on summer afternoons, and the visit is unexpectedly absorbing if you have any interest in plants. The orderly beds, the labels giving Latin name and clinical use, and the small greenhouse of tropical species all reward attention. Check the seasonal hours before going — opening times are limited.
