Menhir de Picarel

A standing stone from the Neolithic period, the Menhir de Picarel stands in open countryside near the village, evidence of human settlement in these uplands going back several thousand years. The Haut Languedoc has several such menhirs scattered across its plateau and hillsides — remnants of a prehistoric landscape that today's chestnut forests and stone villages have largely covered over.

The stone is not large by megalith standards, but its isolated position against the backdrop of the Espinouse hills gives it a quiet presence. A second menhir, the Menhir de Cambaïssy, stands within a short distance and can be visited on the same walk.
