Fontfroide Abbey is the strongest excursion from Narbonne if you want history without a city backdrop. The former Cistercian monastery sits in a dry, folded valley south-west of town, with stone cloisters, a church, terraced gardens, and the quiet authority of a place that once mattered far beyond its walls.
It is easiest with a car, and worth allowing more time than a quick photo stop. The abbey's rooms are handsome, but the pleasure is in the whole setting: warm limestone, cypress trees, herbs, and the sense of monastic order placed deliberately in a wild Languedoc landscape.
