The Via Domitia was the first Roman road built in Gaul, constructed in 118 BC to connect Italy to Spain. A section of it is preserved and visible in the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, right in the middle of the modern city. The original Roman paving stones are exposed under a glass covering, and nearby milestones mark distances to Rome and Cadiz. It is one of the most casually impressive pieces of Roman infrastructure in France — a road still underfoot in the centre of a living town.
