La Maison d'Adam

Ornate 1500s half-timbered house with carved Adam and Eve

Address Place Sainte-Croix

A half-timbered house near the rear of the cathedral, built around 1500 and the finest example of Gothic domestic architecture in Angers. Its two facades — it stands on the corner of two major streets — are covered in carved figures, making it one of the most ornate burgher houses surviving in France. The wooden Adam and Eve give it its popular name.

A story
The house takes its name from the carved wooden figures of Adam and Eve flanking the 'Tree of Life' post — an unusual survival of medieval street-corner symbolism on what was, around 1500, one of Angers' most prominent dwelling-houses.
