Loire Terrace

The terrace runs along the south side of the château, perched above the river. From here you look down on the sandbars and willow islets of the Loire — Europe's last great wild river, mostly unembanked and prone to shifting course — and across to the village of Veuzain-sur-Loire on the far bank.

Bring a coffee from the gatehouse café and sit on the low wall for half an hour. The view does not feature in most guidebooks because there's no signpost; it's simply the best vantage point in Chaumont.
