Eating Out

For a town its size, Loches has a strong food scene. The traditional Touraine kitchen is built around river fish, white asparagus, goat's cheese, and the wines of Vouvray and Chinon. The signature local cheese is Sainte-Maure de Touraine, a long log-shaped goat's cheese run through with a single straw, made in the surrounding villages.

The best restaurants are around the citadel and the market square. Lunchtime menus in the small town centre restaurants are usually around €18-€25; in the evening, two or three places offer more ambitious tasting menus. The cafes on the Place du Marché aux Fleurs and along the Grande Rue are open all day for coffee, beer, and the daily plat du jour. The wine list at almost any restaurant will be excellent and predominantly local: chenin blanc from Vouvray and Montlouis, cabernet franc from Chinon and Bourgueil.
