Tour Saint-Antoine

A 16th-century Renaissance belfry tower in the lower town, one of the few civic clock towers of its date in France

The Tour Saint-Antoine, in the lower town near the market square, is a striking 52-metre Renaissance bell tower built between 1529 and 1575. It is one of only a handful of civic belfries of its date in France -- most clock towers of this size are attached to churches. The lower stages are plain Gothic; the upper section, with its arcaded openings and ribbed dome, is unmistakably Italian Renaissance.

The tower can be climbed in summer, with a guided tour booked at the tourist office. The bells still strike the hour. From the top, the view is the perfect complement to the citadel view: the citadel from outside, the old town spread below, and the Indre winding north into the country.
