The château rises above the old town on a rocky spur and is visible from almost everywhere in Saumur. The climb up through the medieval streets is half the pleasure. Inside, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs holds medieval tapestries and a fine collection of faïence, and the terrace offers a sweeping view over the Loire and the confluence of the Thouet.

Fairy-tale Loire château with sweeping river views
A story
The château appears in the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, the famous illuminated manuscript painted around 1412, depicted as a fairy-tale white palace — it looked then much as it does today.
