Musée des Blindés

One of the largest tank museums in the world, with over 800 vehicles

Saumur has been a centre of French cavalry and armoured warfare since the 19th century, and the Musée des Blindés (Armoured Museum) is the unexpected result: one of the world's most comprehensive tank collections, with more than 880 vehicles from across the 20th century. Many are restored to running order and several are wheeled out for the annual Carrousel parade in July.

The exhibits are arranged chronologically and by nation, with a particularly strong run of German Panzers from the Second World War and a Cold War section that includes Soviet and Warsaw Pact vehicles rarely seen outside Russia. It is a serious museum aimed at enthusiasts but accessible to general visitors. Allow at least two hours.

A story
The collection grew from the military training school at Saumur and now ranges from a 1917 Renault FT — the first tank to use a fully rotating turret, the basic configuration still used today — to Cold War-era T-72s and a Leopard 2.
