Place Saint-Pierre is the natural heart of old Saumur — a small irregular square in the lee of the 12th-century church of Saint-Pierre, paved in cobbles and ringed with restaurants. On a summer evening the terrasses fill up and the square becomes one of the more agreeable places to eat in the Loire Valley.
The church itself, with a much-rebuilt facade and Romanesque interior, is worth a quick look. The half-timbered houses on the north side of the square date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Saturday market spills out from the place into the surrounding streets and is one of the better markets in the region.
