Char à Voile

Sand sailing (char à voile) is Berck's signature activity — three-wheeled land yachts driven by the wind across the firm beach sand, reaching speeds that can genuinely alarm first-timers. The Opal Coast wind makes Berck one of the best places in France for the sport, and the beach is wide enough to run proper courses without conflict with swimmers or walkers.

Several schools operate from the Esplanade Parmentier, offering two-hour introductory sessions with all equipment provided. Dress for the wind: a helmet is mandatory but you will also want waterproofs and closed shoes, since the sand spray is considerable. The Éole Club (Esplanade Parmentier) is the longest-established school and runs sessions for individuals and families daily in season, weekends only off-season. Booking in advance is recommended in July and August.

A story
Berck has hosted the International Kite Festival (Rencontres Internationales de Cerfs-Volants) every April since 1989 — one of the largest kite festivals in the world, with participants from over 30 countries and audiences of up to half a million over nine days. The same reliable Opal Coast wind that makes Berck a sand-sailing destination makes it ideal for kite flying of all kinds.
