Musée de Berck-sur-Mer

The Musée de Berck-sur-Mer (also known as Musée d'Opale Sud) occupies the former gendarmerie building 300 metres from the beach, and covers three areas of local culture that turn out to be more interesting than they sound: fine arts, maritime history, and archaeology. The fine arts collection is the best of these — in the second half of the 19th century, Berck attracted a significant colony of painters drawn by the quality of light on the Opal Coast, and the museum holds a good collection of their work, alongside pieces by later artists including Rodin, who visited.

The maritime section covers the local fishing and lifeboat traditions — Berck was a major fishing port before it became a resort — and the archaeology section includes finds from prehistoric settlements in the bay, including some remarkably well-preserved wooden boats. 60 Rue de l'Impératrice; open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays.
