Day Trips in Northern France

The northern region of France is full of surprises that are both steeped in beauty and history. Although not visited as frequently as the southern regions due to the weather, there are several places to explore, and Northern France Day Trips one can take.

**St. Omer **

St. Omer is a charming little village that lies approximately 40 kilometers from Calais. The town features as one of its main attractions their own Notre Dame cathedral that is nearly as impressive as its counterpart in Paris. St. Omer also has ramparts to explore and a beautiful arboretum that tourists are welcome to enjoy.

**Cassel **

About 30 km from Dunkerque lies the enchanting hilltop village of Cassel. The town's central market place has a very Flemish look and feel to it with highly decorative buildings and architecture. Cassel is a lovely place to stop for a nice lunch and a few drinks. Tourists will love the the outdoor cafes and restaurants that are in abundance in the main square.

The Region of the 7 Valleys

Those exploring northern France by car or motor bike will not want to miss this area of the country. Montreuil is a good place to start the tour. You'll be taken through the ever changing landscapes of rivers, streams and sunken meadows. The views are spectacular and incredibly relaxing.

**Lille **

Both French and Flemish cultures are beautifully blended in Lille. Lille is close to the Belgian border and only a couple of hours drive from Calais. It is also quite a small city so one day is plenty to see all the main tourist attractions. The Old City or Vieux Lille is a must see. If time permits see the Place du General de Gaulle and the Place du Theater.

**Boulonge Sur Mer **

Near the channel tunnel to England lies the fishing village of Boulonge sur Mer. Boulonge Sur Mer is an old fishing port with and old section that is definitely worth exploring. The old section is surrounded by 13th century ramparts and an impressive cathedral.

**Cap Blanc Nez **

Cap Blanc Nez contains and obelisk which commemorates the Dover Patrol who kept the channel free from German U-boats during the first world war. Visitors can drive their cars up to the obelisk where they will also see the stunning views of the ocean and beaches of Northern France.
