The Falaise d'Amont is the eastern cliff, lower and more accessible than the Aval. A wide path climbs from the eastern end of the seafront in about ten minutes, with steps and benches the whole way; the view back across the bay to the Porte d'Aval arch and the Needle is the best in town. At the top is the small chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde and the monument to Nungesser and Coli, the aviators who disappeared from these cliffs in 1927.
There is also a small museum dedicated to their attempt at the Atlantic crossing, with photographs, models of the aircraft, and contemporary press cuttings. The clifftop walks continue north toward Yport along the Sentier des Douaniers, the old coastguard path — a fine day-hike of about three hours each way.
