Église Notre-Dame de Guibray

Romanesque pilgrimage church on the southern edge of Falaise, largely intact

Notre-Dame de Guibray is the finest of Falaise's Romanesque churches and one of the best-preserved in the Calvados. It stands in the Guibray quarter south of the town centre — slightly out of the way, which is part of why it survived the 1944 bombing more completely than other historic buildings nearby.

The church was built in the twelfth century on the site of an earlier sanctuary and served as a pilgrimage destination for several centuries. The nave is wide and calm; the carved stone decoration around the doorways is unusually delicate for a Norman building of this period. Worth the short walk from the castle.
