Musée Août 1944

Normandy's most honest account of the Falaise Pocket battle of August 1944

The August 1944 Museum is dedicated to the Falaise Pocket, the decisive encirclement battle that effectively ended German resistance in Normandy. The collection includes weapons, uniforms, military vehicles, personal effects, and documentary material — much of it specific to the units that fought here. It is one of the least celebrated and most instructive war museums in Normandy, filling gaps left by the larger D-Day museums on the coast.

The museum does not shy away from the catastrophic scale of the German defeat or from the suffering on both sides. For visitors who have already done the Normandy beaches, it offers essential context for the campaign's conclusion.

A story
During the Falaise Pocket in August 1944, Allied forces encircled the German 7th Army and roughly half of Army Group B. An estimated 10,000 Germans were killed and 50,000 captured in less than two weeks. The destruction was so total that General Eisenhower wrote that "roads, fields and forests" were "so choked with enemy equipment, vehicles and supplies" that it was hard to move. Three-quarters of Falaise itself was destroyed in the fighting.
