Roche Tremblante

One of the star attractions of the Huelgoat boulder chaos — a 137-tonne granite boulder balanced in the forest that can be rocked by hand pressure applied at the right point. The trick is knowing where to push: there is a small hollow on the lower surface of the rock, and applying pressure there sets the whole mass trembling visibly.

It is one of those natural phenomena that seems impossible until you see it, and then seems inevitable. The rock sits in a forest clearing a short walk from the village, easily reached on the main trail through the chaos. Children are fascinated. Adults, if they're honest, are too.

The surrounding boulder chaos — hundreds of enormous granite rocks piled in and along a river gorge — is equally dramatic. The boulders were deposited here during the last ice age, and the forest has grown up around them over the millennia since.

A story
The Roche Tremblante weighs 137 tonnes and yet can be set rocking by a single person pushing on exactly the right spot — a small hollow on its lower surface. Mortimer Wheeler, the British archaeologist who excavated the nearby Camp d'Artus, reportedly enjoyed demonstrating this to visitors in the 1930s.
