Musée Nicolas Poussin

The small Musée Nicolas Poussin pays homage to the town's most famous son, the 17th-century French classical painter Nicolas Poussin, who was born near Les Andelys in 1594. The museum occupies a building in Grand-Andely and holds a modest but respectable collection of paintings, drawings, and engravings — not all by Poussin himself, but exploring his world and influence.

Poussin spent most of his working life in Rome and is associated more with Italy than with Normandy, so the museum is as much about reclaiming a local connection as displaying masterworks. It is worth an hour for anyone interested in 17th-century French painting. The collection also includes works by other artists from the Seine valley region.
