Tour Jeanne d'Arc

The Tour Jeanne d'Arc is the last surviving fragment of the castle built by Philippe Auguste in the 13th century, the same castle in which Joan of Arc was held and interrogated in 1431. The five-storey stone keep stands a short walk north of the station, on the slope above the Rue Jeanne d'Arc.

Inside is a small museum about the medieval city, but the building itself is the main attraction. The view from the upper storeys takes in the river, the cathedral, and the maze of streets between.

A story
Joan was actually held in the castle's adjacent dungeon tower, not the one that survives today. The surviving tower — confusingly known as the Tour Jeanne d'Arc — was the castle keep, and the one she would have seen from her cell. It is the only piece of the castle to outlive the late-15th-century demolitions.
