Sentier des Douaniers (Cliff Path)

Historic coastal footpath with views over the Seine estuary and the chalk cliffs

The sentier des douaniers — originally a customs officers' patrol route along the coast — runs west from Villerville along the top of the chalk cliffs toward Honfleur, and east toward Cricqueboeuf and beyond. The path was used to watch for smugglers working the Seine estuary; today it is the main reason to visit this stretch of coast on foot. The views west toward the mouth of the Seine are broad: on a clear day you can see the Pont de Normandie and the industrial edge of Le Havre across the water, the contrast between the working port and the green clifftops being part of the character of this landscape.

Walking toward Honfleur (about 8 km, 2-3 hours at a comfortable pace), the path drops into small valleys, crosses farmland, and passes through stretches of cliff-top scrub before descending to Honfleur's outer harbour. The eastern stretch toward Deauville is gentler and more pastoral — apple orchards, hedgerows, and the occasional farm. Good boots are useful after rain; the chalk becomes slippery when wet and the path is not always well drained. The full Honfleur walk can be done one-way and the return made by bus or taxi, which is the more practical approach.
