Things to Do

The headland cliff path — the sentier des douaniers — is the main draw. Walking north toward Honfleur, the path runs along the top of the chalk cliffs with views down the estuary of the Seine toward the Pont de Normandie and the industrial edge of Le Havre. Toward Cricqueboeuf to the east, the path passes through apple orchards and hedgerow countryside typical of the Norman bocage. Neither stretch requires any special equipment; a couple of hours covers the best sections.

Villerville itself has a small beach below the cliffs, accessible by a footpath down from the village. It works at mid-tide — a mix of sand and pebbles — but disappears at high water, so check tide times before making it the centrepiece of a day. The village is compact and takes half an hour to walk end to end. The main pleasure here is the pace and the landscape rather than any specific sight: the half-timbered houses, the view from the clifftop, the hamlet at Cricqueboeuf with its ivy-covered Romanesque church. This is a place for a slow afternoon, not a checklist.
