Colline Saint-Jacques

The Colline Saint-Jacques rises immediately behind Cavaillon's old town and offers the best viewpoint over the surrounding Luberon plain and the Durance valley. The climb takes about 20 minutes from the old town centre, following a path through scrub oak and thyme, and the summit gives a panorama that makes clear why this site has been valued since antiquity: from here you can see in every direction, from the Alpilles to the south to the Ventoux massif to the north.

The views are at their best in the late afternoon light of summer, when the plain below turns gold and the limestone crags of the Luberon to the east take on a warm pink tone. It is a fine destination for an early morning or evening walk when the heat of the day is past.

A story
The hill has been used as a lookout since at least Roman times — there are traces of a Roman sanctuary on the summit. In the Middle Ages a chapel dedicated to Saint James stood here, making it a waypoint for pilgrims heading south towards the Mediterranean routes to Santiago de Compostela. The chapel ruins and a 19th-century oratory occupy the hilltop today.
