The Palais Carnolès was built in the early 18th century as the summer palace of the Princes of Monaco and later became a favoured winter residence for European aristocracy. Today it houses the municipal art collection of Menton, which includes medieval, Renaissance, and early modern paintings, and the surrounding Jardin d'Agrumes — one of the largest citrus orchards in Europe.
The garden alone is worth the visit: dozens of varieties of lemon, orange, mandarin, and more exotic citrus are grown here, supplying the fruits used in Menton's famous February Lemon Festival. Entry to the garden is free; the museum is modestly priced. The grounds are a 20-minute walk from the town centre along the seafront.
