Place aux Herbes

Tiny shaded square in the old town

A small square halfway between the cathedral and the Hôtel de Ville, Place aux Herbes is exactly the kind of pocket-sized Provençal square you hope to stumble into. A single fountain, four plane trees, a couple of café terraces with rattan chairs, and the smell of lunch from the small restaurants under the arcades.

It takes its name from the medieval herb market that was held here. Today it is one of the better lunch spots in town: two or three restaurants share the square, and the prix-fixe menus at midday cost half what they would in Avignon. Almost everything is closed on Mondays.
