Place de la République

The main old-town square, ringed by cafés and plane trees

The Place de la République is the principal café square of old Orange, a short walk from the cathedral and a couple of blocks from the theatre. Ringed by tall plane trees and a row of cafés with terraces facing each other across the cobbles, it fills up around midday in summer and stays busy into the evening.

At its centre, a fountain and a small monument mark the square. The Thursday weekly market spills into the surrounding streets. It is the obvious place to sit with a pastis and a plate of olives before walking up the hill to the theatre for an evening performance during the Chorégies festival.
