Bakuriani Alpine Botanical Garden

The Bakuriani Alpine Botanical Garden, founded in 1910, sits at around 1,650 metres on a 35-hectare site on the edge of the resort. It is a calm and rewarding place to walk in spring and summer, when the collections of Caucasian rhododendrons, gentians, and alpine wildflowers are at their best.

The garden is maintained by the Georgian Academy of Sciences and is an underrated stop for anyone in Bakuriani outside the ski season. Paths wind through the collections past pine woodland and open alpine meadow. Admission is inexpensive and the garden is rarely crowded even in summer, when the village is busy with Georgians escaping the lowland heat.

A story
Opened in 1910, this garden was established specifically to study and preserve Caucasian alpine flora — plants that grow at elevations where ordinary gardens cannot survive. Today it holds over 1,500 species of alpine and sub-alpine plants from across the Caucasus, making it one of the highest-altitude botanical collections in the world.
