Black Sea Coast

Georgia's subtropical Black Sea coastline, anchored by Batumi and its seafront boulevard.

Georgia's Black Sea coastline runs from Abkhazia in the north down to the Turkish border at Batumi, and the southern stretch is the part that is accessible and worth visiting. The coast has a subtropical climate, palm trees, and sandy beaches — quite different from the dry, mountainous interior of the country.

The northern part of the coast remains difficult due to the unresolved status of Abkhazia, which effectively means that section is off-limits to most visitors arriving from Georgia proper. The south, however, is open and developing rapidly as a tourist destination.

Batumi is the main city on the coast and the one most worth visiting — nineteenth-century architecture, a broad seafront boulevard, Black Sea beaches, and a lively restaurant scene have made it one of the most popular destinations in the Caucasus region.
