Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument

Soviet-era panoramic monument celebrating 200 years of Russian-Georgian relations

A large circular panoramic viewpoint on the Jvari Pass, about 2,400 metres above sea level, with one of the finest views on the Georgian Military Highway — the Aragvi river gorge unfolding below, the Greater Caucasus ridgeline spreading north, and the Soviet road itself curving through the mountain in engineered switchbacks. The circular structure is decorated inside with mosaics depicting scenes of Georgian-Russian brotherhood.

The monument sits right on the road between Gudauri and Kazbegi, making it an easy stop in either direction. The views are best in the morning before cloud builds over the mountains, and the altitude means it can be cold even in summer. A small cluster of vendors sells churchkhela (walnut-and-grape candy) and local honey.

A story
Built in 1983 to mark the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk, by which Georgian kings accepted Russian protection against Persian and Ottoman invasions, the monument now stands as a complicated symbol: the friendship it commemorates has soured into two wars and an ongoing Russian occupation of Georgian territory. The murals inside still show Soviet-era scenes of Georgian-Russian brotherhood.
