Tsunda sits on a geothermal fault and has natural hot mineral springs that have been used for bathing for generations. A family in the village operates a small banya with an indoor mineral pool — the arrangement is informal, and visitors typically knock at the door and negotiate entry. The water is sulphurous and genuinely hot, and the experience of soaking in a timber bathhouse while snow sits on the volcanic plateau above is not easily forgotten.
The springs make Tsunda a useful base for visiting Vardzia in winter or early spring, when the cave monastery can be cold and camping is impractical. After a day scrambling over ruins, returning to a hot mineral bath in a family home — with the option of joining for dinner — is one of the more memorable overnight stops in the southern Caucasus.
