The Kura (Mtkvari) River cuts through deep volcanic rock between Tsunda and Vardzia, and the valley floor makes for excellent walking. The path follows the river bank through orchards and small fields, with the dark basalt canyon walls rising on either side and occasional ruined watchtowers visible on the ridgeline above.
The walk between Tsunda and the Vardzia cave complex is around 5–6 km on foot, following tracks that the local shepherds use. There is almost no tourist infrastructure along the way, which is its charm. In spring the hillsides are covered in wildflowers; in autumn the poplars along the river turn gold. You will likely have the valley to yourself.
