Tsunda Church

The Tsunda Church is a medieval Georgian Orthodox church sitting just above the village, its stone walls blending into the rocky hillside. It is architecturally modest compared with the grand cathedral complexes at Gelati or Alaverdi, but its age and its location — overlooking the Kura River gorge, with Tmogvi fortress visible on the ridge above — give it considerable presence.

The church is associated with the historical significance of Tsunda as the centre of Javakheti. Services are still held here, and the church remains active for the local community. The walk up from the village is short and offers good views over the valley and the volcanic plateau to the south.

A story
Tsunda was the administrative and religious centre of the historic province of Javakheti, and this church was its spiritual heart. Built when Javakheti was a powerful semi-autonomous region, it survived the Ottoman occupation that emptied much of the surrounding landscape — the silent villages and abandoned fields around the Kura valley are testament to that history.
