The Dadiani Palace is the historic residence of the ruling princes of Samegrelo and the centrepiece of a visit to Zugdidi. The complex comprises two 19th-century buildings set in the botanical garden grounds, and the main palace has been converted into a history and ethnography museum with an eclectic collection spanning several centuries of Mingrelian history.
Inside you'll find medieval Georgian weaponry, coins, jewellery, illuminated manuscripts, and personal effects of the Dadiani family. The collection is strongest on Georgian silver, ceremonial armour, and items connected to the last ruling princes. The display of Napoleonic relics — centred on the famous death mask — sits incongruously but memorably among the Georgian antiquities. Guided tours are available and worth taking; the English commentary adds considerably to the experience.
