Rukhi Fortress

Ruined riverside fortress near Zugdidi, built for the old frontier with Abkhazia.

Rukhi Fortress stands northwest of Zugdidi near the Enguri River, close to the modern boundary with Abkhazia. Its broken walls and towers are plain rather than ornate, but the setting gives them force: this was frontier architecture, made to watch routes and absorb pressure rather than impress a court.

The fortress works best as a short side trip if you have a car or driver. There is not much interpretation on site, so read a little before going and treat the visit as landscape plus history. The reward is a quieter, rougher counterpoint to the polished Dadiani Palace in central Zugdidi.
