Housed in a Neo-Renaissance building constructed between 1843 and 1846, the Staatliche Kunsthalle holds one of Baden's finest art collections, focused on German and Dutch painting from the 16th to 19th centuries. Grünewald's famous Crucifixion (1523) is the headline work — one of the most striking late-Gothic paintings in Germany.
The collection is broad: Flemish masters including Rubens and van Dyck, German Romantic painting, Impressionism, and a strong selection of 20th-century German art. The adjacent Kunsthalle Neubau (new building, opened 1987) extends the collection into contemporary work. The museum is less crowded than comparable galleries in Munich or Frankfurt, which makes it easy to spend time with individual works rather than fighting crowds.
